How iQuasar Migrated a Client's High-Traffic Site from Drupal 6 to 11

The Client had been operating its educational directory platform on Drupal 6 since 2004. Over time, the website expanded to more than 200,000 directory pages and began serving 97,000+ unique visitors every day. As traffic, content, and platform requirements grew, the legacy infrastructure could no longer provide the performance, reliability, accessibility, security, and scalability the organization needed. The project focused on modernizing the entire platform while preserving its established directory functionality and creating a stronger foundation for continued growth.

The Client

The Client is a large educational directory platform connecting users with information across multiple categories, including: K-12 schools, colleges and universities, vendors, international programs, summer programs, and performers. With hundreds of thousands of directory pages and a substantial daily audience, the platform requires robust search capabilities, reliable content and profile management, strong technical performance, and infrastructure capable of supporting large volumes of concurrent users. The site also supports multiple listing types, user registrations, affiliate profiles, premium placements, and sponsored advertising, making it both an information platform and a revenue-generating digital ecosystem.

The Drupal Modernization Problem

The Client had been running on Drupal 6 for more than two decades, and the aging platform had become increasingly difficult to maintain. The website frequently experienced slowdowns, crashes, and 500 server errors, making it difficult to reliably serve its 97,000+ daily unique visitors. Its legacy architecture was also struggling to manage more than 200,000 directory pages, increasingly complex directory searches, registrations, profiles, and growing volumes of content.

Beyond reliability, the platform presented several additional challenges. The interface was outdated and did not provide the responsive experience expected across modern desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. The site also required significant improvements to meet ADA/WCAG accessibility standards, including keyboard navigation, semantic structure, form labeling, focus management, and assistive technology support. From a search visibility perspective, the aging architecture created technical SEO limitations related to metadata, redirects, sitemap management, crawlability, and overall site structure. Security and infrastructure were also concerns. The legacy Drupal environment, outdated technology stack, and existing deployment process were no longer appropriate for a platform of this scale.

The client therefore needed more than a visual website refresh. It needed a complete platform modernization that could:

  • Support heavy daily traffic reliably
  • Improve site speed and stability
  • Preserve and enhance complex directory functionality
  • Deliver more powerful search
  • Improve accessibility and mobile usability
  • Strengthen technical SEO and security
  • Support multiple listing and monetization models
  • Provide a scalable foundation for future expansion

The Drupal 6 to 11 Modernization Result

The platform was completely rebuilt and migrated from Drupal 6 to Drupal 11, creating a modern, scalable, secure, and performance-focused digital directory. A new responsive interface was developed to provide a consistent user experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices. The site’s large directory architecture was restructured around six specialized search experiences for K-12 Schools, Colleges & Universities, Vendors, International Programs, Summer Programs, and Performers. Search was powered by Apache Solr 9.7 integrated with Drupal Search API, allowing users to search large datasets more efficiently while supporting customized filters and search logic for each directory.

A new three-tier listing architecture was also implemented:

  • Paid / Registered Listings: Full profiles, profile management, detailed information, and premium placement
  • Affiliate Listings: Full affiliate profiles with featured and promotional capabilities
  • Unregistered / Free Listings: Basic listings containing essential information without full profile functionality

This was complemented by a sponsored banner advertising system across search results and profile pages, providing additional monetization opportunities for paid and affiliate clients. The underlying infrastructure was also modernized. The platform was deployed on a dedicated environment featuring a 16-core Xeon processor, 125GB RAM, and 1.8TB of storage, giving it the capacity required to support high levels of daily traffic.

Performance improvements included:

  • LiteSpeed Web Server
  • LiteSpeed caching with an 86,400-second TTL
  • HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 (QUIC) support
  • TinifyCDN for global image optimization and delivery
  • Image optimization
  • CSS and JavaScript aggregation
  • Frontend performance enhancements

A complete DevOps environment was established, including Java 21, Solr, PHP 8.4, Composer, SSH deployment keys, Git-based deployment, and WHM/cPanel management. Accessibility was significantly strengthened through improvements to keyboard navigation, focus states, semantic HTML, ARIA attributes, form labeling, and other WCAG-focused enhancements. The site’s technical SEO foundation was modernized through improved metadata, redirects, XML sitemap configuration, robots.txt optimization, and better crawlability. Security was strengthened using Imunify360 continuous monitoring and threat protection, reCAPTCHA v3 for registration and login protection, and an updated production architecture. Google Analytics and Google Search Console were integrated to provide better visibility into site performance, search visibility, and marketing activity. BIMI email branding was also implemented to strengthen brand recognition and trust within recipient inboxes. As a result, the client moved from a legacy platform prone to crashes and performance issues to a modern Drupal 11 environment capable of supporting millions of users, hundreds of thousands of pages, multiple specialized directories, and continued platform growth.

Conclusion

The modernization was not simply a Drupal upgrade. It was a complete transformation of a high-traffic educational directory platform that had been operating on aging technology since 2004. By combining Drupal 11, Apache Solr, LiteSpeed, enterprise-grade infrastructure, global CDN delivery, improved accessibility, stronger security, modern SEO practices, and structured monetization capabilities, the platform now has the technical foundation required to reliably support its existing audience while continuing to evolve.

The client can now serve 97,000+ daily unique visitors with greater reliability, provide faster and more intuitive directory discovery, manage listings and profiles more effectively, support paid and affiliate revenue models, and introduce new directories and capabilities without the limitations of its former legacy architecture.
